SmartGuide gets smarter in Auckland’s Victoria Street Car Park

Auckland Transport, part of Auckland Council, have extended their investment in Smart Parking Technology by further enhancing their deployment of SmartGuide - the overhead parking guidance system at Victoria Street Car Park. This means that an additional 672 bays will now be easily identifiable, reducing congestion and improving customer satisfaction.

SmartGuide is a straight-forward guidance system, which detects the occupancy status of every parking space then directs drivers to available bays clearly and accurately. Drivers check guidance signage to assess how many spaces are available on each floor then look for a green overhead indicator to find a vacant space.smart counter

Integrated with SmartRep it provides Auckland Transport with key occupancy data used for a huge range of additional management functions, including payment options and future planning.

Auckland Transport’s parking facilities manager Kevin Enderby said: We are pleased to be able complete the installation of the sensors in our Victoria street car park. Due to the design of the car park, with 20 floors and 880 spaces, it can be difficult for customers to navigate. The site has a very high volume of short stay parkers and the sensors are a highly valued customer enhancement allowing customers to easily locate available spaces.

Smart Parking’s national sales manager for Australasia Rebecca Grainger added: “The solution has already proved to be a success in Victoria Street car park, the move will make finding a parking space even easier whilst improving traffic flow and reducing stress when looking for a space.”

Background – Auckland Transport

In 2012 Auckland Transport deployed Smart Parking’s SmartGuide solution in three of the authority’s busiest Central Business District (CBD) multilevel carparks – The Civic, Downtown and Victoria Street.

Since its launch the driver experience has been transformed in all three car parks. Time-to-park waits have been significantly reduced, as have emission levels. The installation of the system has also had a positive impact on driver perceptions of the facilities – an additional bonus for Auckland Transport.
