Brisbane adds Mastercard’s PayPass to parking meters

Cashless payment

Feeding the meter is sooo 2012! As more and more motorists use cashless payment methods for parking and leave their change in their pocket, city councils have no other choice than to update their parking meters to the latest expectations. Coming soon in Brisbane: PayPass.

PayPass is a contactless payment method that uses NFC. “Tap, pay and be on your way”, as Mastercard promotes it.

In Brisbane 45% of all on-street parking payments are cash handled and 45% are credit card based. The remaining 10% goes to mobile- and SMS payments. Credit card payment has grown 60% over the last 2 years.

As credit card payments are rising so quickly, the city expects this payment method to become even more popular in the future.

The credit card technology will be installed across the whole city’s parking meters by September.
