Light That Elevates Efficiency

Carlton Cole Magee is credited with the invention of the car park in 1935. Times have changed significantly since then. Thankfully, so too has the technology and infrastructure to support them.

At Thorn, a proud member of the Zumtobel Group, we can confidently say that we know car parks.

Through our products, controls, and solutions, we are able to support parking projects around the world. Our luminaires enhance wayfinding, create safer spaces, provide comfort and promote efficiency. Our expertise extends to all parking areas, including outdoor car parks, building surrounds and pathways, indoor covered and multi-storey car parks, pay points and access spaces, security offices, and more. We also offer emergency lighting – and our range is designed, manufactured, and tested to meet the latest European Standards.

Our lighting solutions also help you meet your sustainability goals. While Thorn is on its own journey to reach climate neutrality by 2025, our products and technologies can help you play your part in protecting the planet, too. Indoor and outdoor controls such as NightTune and Variable Light Distribution (VLD) help to reduce the impact of artificial light at night, so protecting dark skies as well as nocturnal environments, and bringing down energy consumption and costs.

Where We Make Light Work

Thorn’s main manufacturing hub is in Spennymoor in the UK. At 40,000 square meters and with up to 500 highly skilled employees on-site, between 6,000 and 8,000 luminaires can be produced each day. There are 37 multi-functional assembly lines, and the plant can operate on a 24/7 basis when needed, but also operates sustainably. As a result, the manufacturing facility at Spennymoor is one of the first companies in the UK to be certified to ISO 14001 – the standard for environmental management.

Sustainability

Did you know that we've committed to relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and are working hard as a business to make improvements as we aim to reach carbon neutrality by 2025?

Product information

Requirements for car parks are far different today than they were in the 1930s when they first came into use. That includes lighting requirements.

Nowadays, because car parks operate 24/7, energy consumption and costs are a big priority alongside safety and wayfinding.
