Glasgow is home for 5,000th solar-powered P&D parking terminal

“The use of solar power to operate our on-street parking equipment is just part of a package of measures that we have introduced to support sustainable development in the City and to maintain our policy on green issues”, stated William O’Rourke, Convenor of the City’s Roads and Lighting Committee.

Councillors and members of GCC’s Land Services department – which is responsible for Glasgow’s on-street parking – recently raised a toast to the solar-powered Stelio P&D terminal at the City Chambers.

“This is a landmark in the use of an environmentally-friendly power source. 5,000 machines installed and operating all-year-round throughout the UK and Ireland illustrates the major success of our commitment to the development of solar power and autonomous equipment ”, commented Arthur Crossley, UK Sales Manager – Parking for Schlumberger e-City.

The Council has a wide range of energy conservation initiatives in-place and wholeheartedly embraces the world-wide drive towards sustainable development and the maintenance of natural resources. “Our parking attendants are supplied with electric scooters and we operate an extensive fleet of LPG-powered vehicles, too”, advised Councillor Margaret Sinclair, Convenor of GCC’s Environmental Sustainability Sub-Committee and its spokesperson on environmental issues.

Solar-powered P&D terminals provide a number of benefits for parking operators. As they do not have to be connected to the mains power supply, installation times, costs, administration and disruption are minimised, because no cabling is required. Nor are there any on-going costs for electricity consumption, as energy from daylight is free. Solar power is environmentally-friendly because it involves neither the recovery and burning of fossil fuels nor the use of nuclear fuels.

Without cabling, solar-powered P&D terminals can be relocated easily and economically when parking zones change or to allow for road works. They are able to support all functions, including cards readers and modems for fully centralised control and monitoring of a P&D system.
