Al Maktoum International Airport Plans 50km Automated People Mover System

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been selected as part of a consortium to deliver an extensive automated people mover (APM) system for the first phase of Al Maktoum International Airport’s development in Dubai.

The contract was awarded by Dubai Aviation City Corporation to a consortium made up of MHI, its Dubai-based subsidiary MHI Mobility Engineering Services (MHI-MESC), and Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The planned system will span approximately 50 kilometres, serve nine stations and operate with a fleet of 165 vehicles.

Designed to connect terminals and other key airport facilities, the APM will support passenger movement as Al Maktoum International Airport expands. The wider airport development is ultimately planned to accommodate as many as 260 million passengers per year, with the new airport expected to open in 2032. Completion of the APM project itself is scheduled for December 2031.

Within the consortium, MHI and MHI-MESC will take responsibility for the design, procurement and testing of the vehicles and signalling system, as well as overall system integration. L&T will handle the design, procurement, testing and on-site construction associated with the other subsystems.

MHI already has experience delivering major transport infrastructure in Dubai. The company previously led the consortium responsible for the Dubai Metro, completed in 2011, and delivered an APM system for Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport in 2012. MHI-MESC continues to provide operation and maintenance services for that airport system.
