Bessemer National Airport Secures $4M to Upgrade Large-Aircraft Parking Area

Investment will modernize apron infrastructure and support future aviation growth

Bessemer National Airport in Alabama has obtained approximately $4 million in funding to renovate its large-aircraft parking apron, a project aimed at improving safety, operational efficiency and long-term airport capacity.

The renovation will focus on the airport’s primary apron used by larger aircraft. This area regularly accommodates corporate jets and other larger aviation assets, making it a critical component of airport operations. Planned improvements are expected to strengthen pavement conditions and modernize infrastructure to ensure the apron can safely support heavier aircraft.

Airport officials say the upgrade forms part of a broader infrastructure strategy designed to prepare the facility for continued growth. The project will help protect aircraft operating at the site while supporting increasing activity at the airport and nearby aviation-related developments.

The investment follows the airport’s recent elevation to National status within the U.S. aviation system, a designation that recognizes its expanded role in handling larger aircraft and supporting regional aviation services.

In addition to resurfacing and structural improvements to the apron, the project includes relocating the airport’s Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS). Moving the equipment will free up space for potential future hangar development and additional aviation facilities.

Support for the funding effort came from members of Alabama’s congressional delegation, who backed the investment as part of broader efforts to strengthen aviation infrastructure in the region.

Once completed, the renovation is expected to enhance operational reliability at Bessemer National Airport and provide the capacity needed to accommodate larger aircraft and future aviation-related development in the surrounding area.
