Innovative Bicycle Parking Flooring by Bolidt Transforms Amsterdam’s Cycling Landscape

The garage is conveniently located near popular destinations, making it a convenient option for residents and tourists.

Amsterdam, known worldwide for its vibrant cycling culture, has unveiled a project named ‘The Entree’. This consists of an innovative bicycle parking garage located beneath Amsterdam Central Station. The entire area between the Schreierstoren and the Droogbak will become clearer and more attractive. The renewal is an improvement for all Amsterdam residents and visitors who walk, cycle, and take public transport here.

Max Bögl carried out this project on behalf of the City of Amsterdam. An underground bicycle parking for 7,000 cyclists, renewed streetcar tracks and stops, replaced cables and pipes, and new paving. Implementation started in early 2018 and took a total of five years. In addition to its practicality, the bicycle parking garage also emphasizes sustainability. Furthermore, the garage is conveniently located near popular destinations, making it a convenient option for residents and tourists.

The project started with deepening the road under the tracks on the west side of the station: the West Entrance. In 2019, the construction of the underground bicycle parking began with the creation of the construction pit. Meanwhile, we are working on the structural work. The project is in the middle of a super "traffic hub" where all forms of public transport can be found; train, streetcar, metro, bus, ferry, and public transport passengers. Every day, 300,000 travelers pass through the area in front of the central station and some 1,300 streetcar rides depart daily.

The development of this bicycle parking garage was made possible through a collaboration with Bolidt, a leading provider of sustainable flooring and surface solutions. Sustainability and user convenience were key considerations for the project. The parking showcases Bolidt's durable and innovative flooring solution for car and bicycle parking, Boligrip 50R, which offers exceptional grip and stability for a safe user experience.

Boligrip 50 is a series of slip-resistant up to 2 mm thick floor finishing systems based on two-component, solvent-free synthetic resins. The systems in the series have been specially developed for application in car parks and other parking facilities. The Boligrip 50 series is used for driving lanes, parking bay areas, storage rooms, technical rooms, and bike parking. The systems in the Boligrip 50 series are vapor open, which is why they are used specifically in the lowest underground levels with groundwater underneath the floors. The inert materials broadcast and incorporated into the pigmented compound have a polished stone value of at least 77, producing a non-slip and very wear-resistant finish.
