Brighton & Hove Launches UK's Largest On-Street EV Charging Project
Brighton & Hove City Council has initiated the installation of over 6,000 kerbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers, marking the UK's largest on-street EV charging project. This initiative is supported by a £130 million contract with chargepoint operator char.gy and is part of the government's £381 million Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) funding program.
The first charger has been installed on Lawrence Road in Hove. The project aims to provide convenient charging solutions for residents without off-street parking, facilitating the transition to electric vehicles. The installation of these chargers is expected to make EV ownership more accessible and affordable for local residents.
John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, emphasized the company's commitment to delivering reliable and affordable EV charging solutions for the community. Trevor Muten, the council's cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure, highlighted the project's role in supporting the growing number of electric vehicle users in the city.
A spokesperson from the Department for Transport reiterated the government's goal to install over 100,000 chargepoints nationwide, making it easier and cheaper for people to own and operate electric vehicles.
