CBD kerbside parking operator to test new parking sensor product
The City of Cape Town would like to advise motorists that the kerbside parking operator for the CBD will be testing parking bay sensors on some of its central city parking bays. The trial will start in Long Street and be extended throughout the CBD.
The device consists of a rubber mat containing a parking sensor, which is placed in the middle of the parking bay each morning at 08:00 and then removed at 17:00. A total of 90 units are available for placement each day.
When the portable sensor detects the presence of a vehicle in a parking bay, a signal is sent to the back office computer and to the hand-held units carried by parking marshals. In this way, compliance with the applicable parking periods can be monitored.
The device will not impact on the way motorists park because it is static and non-intrusive.
These portable sensors provide useful and accurate data which can be analysed either immediately or at a later stage. This data will help the operator learn more about the utilisation of the central city parking bays, so that processes can be streamlined accordingly.
The devices are able to provide a range of information, including bay occupancy; the duration of a vehicles stay; the percentage of unoccupied parking bays in an area; the bays used most often; how often maximum time periods are exceeded; and the efficiency of enforcement, amongst others.
If the trial is successful, the operator may consider using the product and the City will inform road users accordingly.
