China’s EV Charging Network Reaches 23.68 Million Charging Points

China’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure continued to expand rapidly in 2026, with the country reaching 23.68 million charging points by the end of July, up 41.9% compared with the same period last year.

Public charging infrastructure accounted for 5.099 million charging points, representing year-on-year growth of 21.3%. The much larger private charging segment increased even faster, reaching 18.58 million charging points, 48.8% more than a year earlier.

The continued rollout of charging infrastructure coincides with strong growth in China’s new-energy vehicle market. In July 2026, new-energy vehicles accounted for more than 60% of monthly new-car sales for the first time.

Production of new-energy vehicles reached approximately 1.57 million units during July, while sales totaled around 1.56 million units. Compared with July 2025, production increased by 26.8% and sales rose by 23.7%.

China is continuing to expand charging capacity to support the increasing number of electric and other new-energy vehicles on its roads. A three-year infrastructure programme introduced in October 2025 sets a target of establishing 28 million charging points nationwide by the end of 2027.

Under the programme, the combined capacity of the country’s public charging infrastructure is also expected to exceed 300 million kW by the end of 2027.

Further growth in electric mobility is expected over the remainder of the decade. China has set a target for new-energy vehicles to account for 30% of the country’s total vehicle fleet by 2030, as part of its carbon-reduction plans for the 2026–2030 period.
