The results of National Survey of Electric Vehicle Drivers were explained during the conference
Circontrol participated in EV Data Day last Tuesday February 13th. During the conference they presented the results of the National Survey of Electric Vehicle Drivers and they discussed the status of electric mobility in Catalonia.
Xavier Cañadell, CEO in Electromaps, and Gustavo Franco, CEO in All Media Consulting, have presented the main results of the surveys focused on EV drivers’ behaviour in Catalonia. They have highlighted that on a working day most EV drivers travel between 20 and 100 km (33% travel between 20 and 50 km and another 33% travel between 50 and 100 km). In addition, most of these drivers have a domestic EV charging point installed at home, only a 6% do not have it installed, and half of them use it daily. Among their main interests are installing renewable energies at home (56%), this is to be expected if you have in mind that people who choose electric mobility are concerned about energy efficiency, and also the adequacy of electricity tariff.
They have also asked for some improvements: autonomy increasing (45,72%), installation of more charging points (15,99%), tax supression (14,50%), a wider variety of car models (11,52%), restrictions for polluting vehicles (4,09%), a better integration of charging stations (3,35%), grants for the purchaising of an EV (2,60%) and for the installation of charging points (1,68%).
During the day, company and institutions representatives have spoken about different topics related to electric mobility. Salvador Bayo, Barcelona Provincial Council, has talked about the promotion of electric mobility in Barcelona area and Eugenio Candela, from Ecorepost International, has spoken about the future of EV charging.
Electric mobility, an effective and efficient choice
On behalf of Circontrol, Joan Pallisé, Institutional Relations manager, spoke about energy self-sufficiency of electric mobility. In his speech, Pallisé spoke about the dilemma between effectiveness and efficiency and how it applies to electric mobility. Pallisé has explained how people can take the bait of saying that electric mobility doesn’t solve any environmental problem but moves it from the exhaust pipe to the power station. However, Pallisé explained how energy required to charge electric vehicles can be obtained from primary sources and, therefore, can largely come from renewable energy. And in his presentation he provided some examples: a 3MW wind generator allows charging 700 cars per year hat can cover 20.000 km/year and with 4 solar panels its possible to produce 1.300 kwh/year that allow travel 6.500 km/year.
Another concern regarding the transition to electric mobility is range anxiety. Pallisé has talked about it and about the importance of increasing battery capacity to increase vehicles autonomy, going from 16/24 kWh to 40/60 kWh would go from a 150km to a 400km autonomy. Power increasing is also very important to increase charging velocity.
In short, according to Pallise, choosing electric mobility brings us closely to sustainability for various reasons. Electric mobility allows to face environmental challenges and improve air quality, improves energy efficiency and promotes the use of renewable energy and allows to advance towards self-consumption, electricity storage or recycling and the second life of batteries.
