City of Oak Ridge Participates in National Electrical Vehicle Charging Project

The City of Oak Ridge is installing ten electric vehicle charging stations at five locations throughout the city. Two Level II Blink chargers will be installed at each of the following locations: the Oak Ridge Civic Center, Haw Ridge Park, Oak Ridge Fire Stations 1 & 2, and the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. The sites were selected on the basis of proximity to a frequently visited destination, or heavily travelled corridor.

The Level II chargers are able to fully charge a vehicle in four to six hours, and the chargers will be available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The City is not required to pay an installation fee, but will cover the minimal cost associated with electric consumption.

The Electric Vehicle Project (EV Project) is the largest deployment of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure in history, and the project is being funded by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). ECOtality received the $114.8 million grant to manage the EV Project nationwide.

Installation of the electric vehicle charging stations is another step toward becoming a more sustainable community, which supports the implementation of the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP).

Installation of the charging stations has begun, and should be ready for use by November 1st, barring unforeseen circumstances.
