Cumberland Advances EV Infrastructure with £57M Charging Contracts

- Cumberland, United Kingdom
£57 million programme to deliver hundreds of chargers across residential areas, town centres, and transport hubs

Cumberland Council has approved major contracts worth approximately £57 million to accelerate the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the region.

The large-scale programme aims to significantly expand charging availability over the coming years, supporting thousands of EV users and helping to meet rising demand. The investment will fund the installation of a broad network of chargers, including standard on-street units and rapid charging hubs at key locations.

Plans indicate that hundreds of new charging points will be deployed in phases, targeting residential streets, town centres, transport hubs, and public car parks. Particular focus will be placed on areas where households lack access to private driveways, ensuring more equitable access to EV infrastructure.

The contracts have been awarded to multiple providers responsible for delivering, installing, and maintaining the network. The rollout is expected to span several years, with early installations beginning in the near term and scaling up progressively.

The initiative is supported through national funding schemes designed to boost EV adoption and reduce transport-related emissions. By increasing the availability and reliability of charging facilities, the project is expected to encourage more drivers to transition to electric vehicles.

Once fully implemented, the £57 million programme will represent a substantial expansion of Cumberland’s charging capacity, reinforcing long-term goals to cut emissions, modernise transport infrastructure, and support a growing EV market.
