Des Moines International Expands Parking Ahead of Terminal Project

Des Moines International Airport has opened a major addition to its parking garage, creating over 1,100 new covered spaces and bringing the total to more than 3,000. The expansion, which became operational this week, introduces a new entrance route for drivers—located on the right side of Terminal Drive—and is designed to streamline traffic flow and improve access to hourly and daily parking areas.

To make parking more convenient for travelers, the airport is adding features like colored markings on support pillars to help identify parking levels, along with new signage and guidance systems to assist drivers in finding available spots more quickly. Additional improvements to surface parking are also underway.

This parking development is one part of a larger modernization plan that includes the construction of a new terminal, expected to open in 2027. The upgrades come as the airport continues to see strong passenger numbers, with more than 3 million travelers passing through in both 2023 and 2024.
