Doncaster Sheffield Airport Secures £57 Million Funding Boost for Reopening Plans

Funding approval moves Doncaster Sheffield Airport closer to reopening as infrastructure works and operational planning continue

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has secured a £57 million loan to support its planned reopening, marking a significant step forward in efforts to bring commercial operations back to the South Yorkshire hub.

City of Doncaster Council approved the funding following weeks of political debate and uncertainty surrounding the airport’s future. The loan will finance essential infrastructure upgrades required before the airport can resume operations.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport ceased commercial flights in 2022 after former owner Peel Group determined the site was no longer financially viable. Since then, local authorities, unions and business groups have campaigned to restore the airport, arguing it could generate jobs, strengthen regional connectivity and support economic growth.

The wider reopening programme is estimated to cost around £193 million and includes a long-term lease agreement with Peel Group as well as the appointment of a new operating company, FlyDoncaster.

Council representatives said the approval allows the airport programme to move forward again, with negotiations and preparatory work expected to continue in partnership with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and other stakeholders.

Recent developments at the airport have included recruitment for operational and security roles, along with discussions with potential cargo operators. Airport executives have indicated that freight operations could become an important part of the site’s future business model.

Plans currently envision a phased reopening, with passenger services expected to return later in the decade. Once fully operational, the airport is projected to handle millions of passengers annually while also supporting cargo activity and regional employment growth.
