DRIVERS' NEW ANGER CRAZE
A new form of driver anger dubbed "parking rage" is said to have seen motorists pay L165m in parking fines last year.
A new report reveals that many drivers are prepared to break the law in frustration over a chronic shortage of spaces.
More than 32 million drivers were said to be competing for just two million spaces in car parks.
This fuelled "rebellious behaviour" by many people, research for Privilege Insurance claims.
One-in-10 drivers received at least one fine in the past year, while half blamed the parking rage phenomenon for breaking the law.
The research also showed that one-in-three drivers parked illegally through sheer frustration.
Car parking charges were another problem, with the cost of a two-hour stay in parts of London now more than L7.
Some motorists even had to pay to park at home or work, according to the survey of 2,200 drivers.
Privilege business manager Catherine Alty said: "Our research shows the problem is so great that some people are prepared to get fined on a regular basis - and not just because the fine is less expensive than parking costs.
"It's frustration levels - parking rage - that pushes people into not caring that they are parking illegally."
