EBRD Financing to Support 2,700 New EV Charging Points Across Central Europe
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is backing the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Central Europe through a €35 million loan to GreenWay, a regional EV charge point operator.
The financing forms part of a broader €113 million debt package that will support the deployment of 2,700 fast and ultra-fast public EV charging points across Poland, the Slovak Republic and Croatia by 2028. The new chargers will be installed in areas with high traffic volumes and dense populations, improving access to public charging and helping facilitate cross-border electric vehicle travel.
The project aims to address the region’s comparatively limited EV charging infrastructure. By increasing the availability of reliable public charging, the initiative is expected to support wider adoption of electric mobility and contribute to national and European Union climate targets.
GreenWay sources all of its electricity from renewable energy, which strengthens the environmental impact of the network expansion and helps ensure that the additional charging capacity contributes to lower transport-related emissions.
The EBRD loan is supported by a first-loss guarantee from the European Union under the InvestEU programme. InvestEU is designed to stimulate sustainable investment, innovation and job creation across EU member states. The EBRD is one of the programme’s key implementing partners, using EU guarantees to mobilize financing in eligible sectors.
GreenWay, headquartered in Poland, is active across Central and Eastern Europe and currently operates more than 3,000 public charging points in Poland, Slovakia and Croatia. The company plans to significantly increase its network to help accelerate the transition to cleaner transport across the region.
The EBRD has a long-standing presence in the three target markets, with more than €25 billion invested across Croatia, Poland and the Slovak Republic, primarily in the private sector.
