Edinburgh Airport Unveils £500 Million Expansion and Infrastructure Programme
Edinburgh Airport has announced a major five-year investment programme worth more than £500 million, covering terminal expansion, new aircraft infrastructure, passenger facilities and wider improvements across the airport campus.
The programme represents the largest capital investment initiative in the airport’s history and forms the first stage of a broader long-term development plan designed to increase capacity and prepare the airport for future passenger and route growth.
A major focus will be the transformation of the terminal. Plans include increasing the terminal footprint by 60%, expanding the check-in hall and departure lounge, and developing new international arrivals, baggage make-up and baggage reclaim facilities.
The airport will also add new gates and aircraft stands to support additional aircraft movements and future route development. The investment is intended to help accommodate both short-haul and long-haul services, strengthening connections between Scotland and destinations across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia and other international markets.
Passenger-facing areas will also be upgraded, with additional and improved retail, food and beverage facilities planned as part of the wider terminal redevelopment.
Work is already underway on the South East Pier expansion, which forms part of the first phase of the investment programme. The development is scheduled to become fully operational in summer 2027.
Beyond the terminal itself, Edinburgh Airport plans further infrastructure improvements across the airport campus. These will include additional electric vehicle infrastructure, a new access road and other supporting projects.
Sustainability will also form part of the programme. The airport says the new and modernised infrastructure will support its Greater Good sustainability strategy and provide opportunities for further low-carbon improvements.
The five-year investment programme is backed by Edinburgh Airport owners VINCI Airports and Global Infrastructure Partners and is intended to form the foundation for further long-term investment in the airport’s infrastructure, operations and capacity.
