Unity5 Partners with Go2Sim to Support Local Charity DSRT Ashburton with Starlink Connectivity

Unity5 supports local charity Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (DSRT) Ashburton. We’re providing crucial StarLink Mini connectivity, a year’s subscription, and partnering with Go2Sim for five essential SIM cards to boost their operational capabilities in remote areas.

DSRT Ashburton is one of 47 volunteer mountain rescue teams across England and Wales, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These unpaid volunteers respond to approximately 40 incidents annually, ranging from recovering climbers and lost walkers to searching for missing children and vulnerable adults, and aiding in swift water and flood rescues. The charity relies almost entirely on donations, with annual running costs of around £50,000, receiving no statutory government funding.

Al Pewsey, ICT Officer at DSRT Ashburton said, “Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton responds to over 40 emergency service requests to help those in need annually. We provide vital assistance not only to individuals lost or injured in remote locations, but increasingly to vulnerable people affected by mental health challenges or dementia across Dartmoor, south and east Devon.

Thanks to Unity5’s generous sponsorship of a satellite-based roaming internet solution for our mobile incident control vehicle, we are now equipped to fully embrace digital technologies that enhance our operations. This transformative connectivity empowers our search managers with access to collaborative planning tools, and advanced communication capabilities, improving the effectiveness of our rescue response.

Previously, our volunteer-led organisation, funded 92% by public and business contributions, faced significant connectivity limitations due to the rural terrain in which we operate. Unity5’s support has eliminated this barrier, ensuring robust connectivity regardless of location and enabling us to adopt innovative tools that strengthen our response capabilities.

Staff from Unity5 had a tour of the rescue vehicle and the systems that DSRT Ashburton use.

Currently, DSRT Ashburton’s system is heavily dependent on traditional network reception, leading to unreliability in poor service areas and potentially impacting critical rescue missions. The provision of two StarLink Mini units (one for their base and one for a rescue vehicle) and five SIM cards will provide vital, reliable connectivity, ensuring seamless communication and data access during operations. Unity5 intends to continue this partnership in the future.
