Government to get tough with car parks?

Home Office minister John Denham MP is to speak at this year’s Spring Seminar, being held at the Brewery, Chiswell Street, London on 19 March 2003
bpa.jpgAnnouncing the results of an independent study into the effectiveness of Secured Car Parks in reducing crime, Denham is expected to confirm that the Scheme does significantly reduce crime. With this in mind, it is thought that Denham will state that if the parking industry does not voluntarily increase take-up of the Scheme then the Government would consider legislation to impose minimum security standards within car parks.

At the same time, the BPA has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer urging him to cut business rates on Secured Car Parks by 50% in the forthcoming budget. Keith Banbury, Chief Executive of the BPA, explains: “By reducing business rates for Secured Car Parks we would expect that many more operators would become part of the Scheme. This would not only mean better car parks for the paying public, but also drastically reduce crime figures as a whole. This is one of the government’s key objectives and we believe we have found a cost-effective way for them to achieve their goal.”

“Not only is this a proven method of reducing crime,” said Banbury, “but it is also a very prudent measure. We believe we have come up with the perfect solution. The reduction in business rates on Secured Car Parks will benefit the exchequer, the car park operators and the motoring public. This is a win-win solution, and one that would lead to a safer and more secure society.”
