Kapsch TrafficCom Begins Smart Parking Project in Tenerife

Kapsch TrafficCom has started implementing a smart parking project in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, aimed at integrating parking availability information with the city’s wider traffic management infrastructure.

Under the project, occupancy information from 24 parking areas across central Santa Cruz will be incorporated into the city’s traffic management system. The real-time data will give traffic operators greater visibility of parking availability while providing drivers with more up-to-date information on where spaces can be found.

Parking information will also be made available at the city’s traffic control centre, where the data can be used to analyse parking patterns and system performance. The information could additionally support forecasting of future parking demand and help authorities evaluate alternative approaches to mobility management.

As part of the implementation, Kapsch TrafficCom will install and integrate nine variable message panels throughout Santa Cruz. These displays will provide road users with real-time parking availability information, helping drivers make decisions before reaching individual parking facilities.

The occupancy information is supplied by parking operators and incorporated into the central traffic platform. In the future, the system could also make use of AI-based video analytics to automate parts of the parking data collection process.

By improving access to parking availability information, the project is intended to reduce the amount of traffic generated by motorists searching for spaces, while supporting more efficient use of the city’s existing parking infrastructure. This is also expected to contribute to lower congestion and pollution.

The project has a value of approximately €404,000 and is scheduled to be completed in early 2027. Kapsch TrafficCom has previously worked with Santa Cruz de Tenerife on parking management technology at Las Teresitas beach.
