Las Vegas Drivers Can Use Credit Cards And Cell Phones At New Parking Meters

Reino Enforcement Technology and Peppercoin Team Up For Next Generation Meters That Notify Drivers on Their Cell Phone When Time is Running Low.
The City of Las Vegas is one of the first cities in the country to let drivers pay for on-street parking with their credit card and cell phones, instead of searching for loose change. Las Vegas has replaced old parking meters with 15 new meters, covering 150 parking spots, in the city's downtown business district.

“As we see many new projects being constructed in downtown, there is an increasing demand for metered parking spaces," said City Manager Doug Selby. "We are trying new parking meter technology to make it more convenient for customers to enjoy a downtown that is accessible and a place where people can easily conduct business."

The latest technology meters, which began operation today, are from Reino Enforcement Technology. The pay by cell phone service is the world leading mPARK service. The cell phone payments are processed by Peppercoin, a payments technology company that enables profitable new business models for low-priced digital content and physical goods.

Drivers can enroll in Reino's mPark service at www.mparkusa.com – registration is free. The service can help Las Vegas drivers avoid parking tickets by sending a reminder SMS text message to a subscriber's phone approximately 10 minutes before their meter time expires. Drivers can then purchase more time by simply making a cell phone call.
Searching for change for parking meters and then worrying if your time is running out have always been two of drivers' biggest concerns,” said Mark Ralston, executive vice president of operations, Reino Enforcement Technology. “Now Las Vegas drivers don't have to worry about this thanks to the convenience of our Multispace Parking Meters and the Peppercoin Small Transaction Suite, which allows the city to provide alternative payments for low-priced meter transactions.”

Consumers are demonstrating a clear and growing preference to use their credit cards, debit cards and cell phones for purchases of all sizes. Each year, consumers in the United States make more than 350 billion transactions of less than $5, representing $1.32 trillion in aggregate revenue. This presents a significant growth opportunity for the credit and debit card market, and Peppercoin is at the forefront in providing a solution that allows vendors, such as Reino Enforcement Technology, and financial services institutions to card-enable their transactions, capture a larger market share with flexible business models, and drive new revenue streams.

“Reino and Las Vegas are parking innovators who have taken the industry forward by making parking as consumer-friendly as possible,” said Mark Friedman, president and CEO of Peppercoin. “This deployment is another milestone for the Peppercoin Small Transaction Suite and further demonstrates the potential to improve consumers' experiences by letting them use their preferred payment devices–credit and debit cards, as well as cell phones–for transactions of all sizes in the physical world.”
