Midland Advances Airport Parking Expansion with New Lot Project
The Midland City Council has approved a construction contract for a new parking facility at Midland International Air and Space Port, marking an important step in addressing rising parking demand at the airport.
Boler Equipment Services, Inc. has been selected to deliver the project, which is valued at approximately $5.93 million. The development of Parking Lot P6 represents an initial phase in a broader strategy to expand parking capacity and support future infrastructure, including a planned multi-level parking garage.
City officials highlighted that the contract was awarded significantly below the projected budget, enabling the project to move forward with cost efficiencies while still meeting operational needs. The airport has experienced sustained pressure on its existing parking supply, prompting the need for additional space.
The new surface lot will be developed on an area currently used for overflow parking and is expected to provide around 835 parking spaces. These spaces will play a key role during the construction of the future parking garage by accommodating displaced vehicles.
Looking ahead, the site is intended to be repurposed into a centralized rental car facility once the garage is completed. This transition aims to consolidate rental operations into a single location, improving traffic circulation and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Funding for the project will come from the airport’s enterprise fund, meaning it is financed through airport-generated revenue rather than local taxes. Parking operations have been a strong contributor, generating more than $8 million in revenue over the past year.
The total budget allocated to the project exceeds $7 million, with additional contingency funds set aside. Several contractors submitted bids, but Boler Equipment Services was chosen based on a combination of competitive pricing and proven performance. Earlier procurement efforts had been revisited to secure a more cost-effective proposal.
Due to its location further from the terminal, the new parking lot will be supported by a shuttle service to ensure convenient passenger access. The airport has already acquired vehicles that will operate between the lot and the terminal building.
Parking Lot P6 forms part of a wider Airport Entranceway Improvement Project, which also includes enhancements such as upgraded perimeter fencing. Together with other initiatives, including terminal expansion works, these developments are intended to accommodate growing passenger numbers and improve overall airport functionality.
