Missouri Begins $33 Million I-70 Truck Parking Expansion

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has started work on a $33 million project to expand and modernize truck parking facilities along Interstate 70.

The Improve I-70: Truck Parking project will upgrade existing rest areas in Concordia, Boonville, Mineola and Wright City, addressing a shortage of designated parking for commercial vehicles along the corridor. More than 10,000 trucks travel on I-70 each day, while MoDOT says all public truck parking areas reach capacity during peak periods and around 75% of private truck stops are also full.

The project will add 255 truck parking spaces, increasing the total number of public truck parking stalls available at the improved locations to 506. It also includes 195 car parking spaces and five RV spaces.

Expanding designated truck parking is intended to improve safety by reducing the number of trucks parking along interstate ramps and shoulders when formal facilities are full. MoDOT also expects this to reduce damage to shoulders and guardrails associated with roadside truck parking.

The design-build contract has been awarded to the KCI Construction Team, consisting of KCI Construction and engineering and design firm Bartlett & West. 

Construction will be carried out in phases, with the individual rest areas remaining open while improvements take place. Work is expected to continue through late 2028, with MoDOT targeting completion by December 2028.
