Counting taxis at the Vienna International Airport

MSR-Traffic delivers a wireless counting system

Flughafen Wien

The Vienna International Airport, operated by the Flughafen Wien AG, is the biggest airport in Austria and the likely most important one in Europe because of its central location. Moreover it is an essential hub for the Lufthansa subsidiaries Austrian Airlines and Eurowings Europe as well as the Air-Berlin subsidiary Flying NIKI.

More than 23 million passengers will be handled per year at the airport – connected to more than 180 destinations in 73 countries with 75 international airlines. Nowadays the Vienna International Airport is an important commercial and business location. A lot of retail shops, restaurant, fast-food chains as well as hotels settled down to get closer to their customers. For that reason traffic volume and parking get greater attention.

On behalf of the Flughafen Wien AG, MSR-Traffic implemented an automatic wireless traffic counting system at the cabs lane. This project primarily helps to get a better overview how many passengers will be transported by cabs to/from the Vienna International Airport. Moreover the system could be easily expanded to all entrance and exit lanes of the airport to generate analysis and trends of the overall traffic volume. At an early stage traffic jams and stopping traffic will be detected and appropriate measures can be taken in a timely manner. The Flughafen AG is also interested in MSR-Traffic’s single space detection system for outdoor parking. This system reduces the number of cars searching for parking spaces and improves traffic safety and the customer’s comfort.
