MPS: Belleville Launches SafetyStick® Deployment to Strengthen Street Safety
The Township of Belleville has taken another step to improve community safety with the installation of MPS SafetySticks® at intersections and fire hydrants across the city. These smart parking enforcement devices operate 24/7, monitoring no-parking zones and transmitting photos of illegally parked vehicles directly to the Belleville Police Department. Once violations are confirmed, parking violation summonses are issued and mailed to vehicle owners.
The initial phase of Belleville’s SafetyStick deployment focuses on keeping people and property safe by maintaining clear access to fire hydrants, intersections, and other critical areas. In a post on its official Facebook page, the Belleville Police Department stated, “The goal of this effort is to stop illegal parking and improve safety.”
When announcing the deployment of the solar-powered street safety devices, City of Belleville officials stressed the need for better parking compliance for safer streets, stating:
“Vehicles illegally parked at yellow curbs near crosswalks and intersections obstruct traffic sight lines, which creates a safety hazard for pedestrians crossing the streets and for motorists making turns.”
Strong Resident Support
Residents quickly expressed support for the new technology on social media. Comments highlighted concerns about cars parked too close to corners and blocking visibility, with many suggesting additional intersections where SafetySticks should be installed.
Residents went on to note that the devices would help “make the community better for everyone and safer,” while others asked for “hundreds more” to be placed throughout town.
How SafetyStick Works
The SafetyStick® is a solar powered device designed to monitor no-parking zones around the clock. Using an integrated camera and secure wireless connection, it captures images of vehicles parked illegally and transmits them in real time to the city’s enforcement system.
Once a violation is confirmed, a digital record is created, and a parking violation is automatically issued and mailed to the vehicle owner. This automated process provides consistent, unbiased enforcement while reducing the need for manual patrols, allowing police officers to remain focused on higher-priority public safety duties.
According to MPS officials, the adoption in Belleville reflects a growing trend across the nation as cities and policy departments face tight budgets.
“Cities across the nation are turning to SafetyStick because it delivers efficient, consistent enforcement and frees up police resources for higher-priority public safety work,’ said Rob Mathews, Vice President of Sales and Business Development. “With limited budgets and growing demands, communities need solutions that let technology handle routine parking enforcement while officers stay focused on preventing crime and protecting residents."
The Belleville rollout builds on similar deployments across New Jersey as municipalities look for cost-effective ways to protect public safety.
