MPS: Somerville Expands SafetySticks to Keep Fire Lanes Clear

Citywide Expansion Extends AI-Powered, Solar Enforcement From Bus Stops and Crosswalks to Fire Lanes

Somerville Uses Smart Tech to Keep Fire Lanes Clear Citywide

Somerville is expanding its SafetyStick® program to protect fire lanes citywide after two years of success curbing illegal parking at bus stops and crosswalks. The solar-powered, camera-enabled devices use onboard AI to detect violations, capture time-stamped images, and support mailed citations, improving compliance in high-risk locations with minimal street infrastructure.

The city first deployed SafetyStick® devices two years ago and has since reordered the devices multiple times to cover additional problem areas. With the latest phase, fire lanes are a priority, so emergency responders have unimpeded access when every second counts.

“Fire lanes are critical areas that need to be kept clear,” said Suzanne Rinfret, director of parking. We tried everything, including cones and delineators, but none of it worked. Now, with SafetySticks in place, people are receiving tickets of more than $100 in the mail, complete with time-stamped images of their vehicles.”

Early outcomes mirror the results seen at bus stops and crosswalks: dramatic reductions in violations, faster turnover of curb space, and a strong return on enforcement thanks to consistent, 24/7 coverage and automated evidence collection. The city’s approach shows how smart solutions can improve safety and compliance while reducing the need for labor-intensive, on-site enforcement,” said Rob Matthews, vice president of business development at Municipal Parking Services (MPS).
