NGED Strengthens EV Charging Capabilities with £13 Million Investment

EV Charging Capabilities with £13 Million Investment

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is expanding its electric vehicle charging infrastructure with the installation of 182 new charging bays at 83 substations and 8 office locations. This £13 million investment increases NGED’s total charging capacity to 444 bays, forming one of the UK’s largest privately operated EV charging networks.

The enhanced network is designed to support NGED’s operational fleet, which includes over 1,000 electric vehicles—around 600 cars and 400 vans. The expansion also prepares for the arrival of new vehicle models such as the Skoda Enyaq AWD and Ford Explorer, which are set to further boost the company’s electrification efforts.

Charger locations are being strategically placed to ensure field staff remain within a 10-mile radius of a charging point, enabling quicker response times and minimising unnecessary travel. By using substations as charging sites, the infrastructure directly supports daily operational routes in both rural and urban areas across the South West, South Wales, and the Midlands.

NGED is working with Rock Power Connections to deliver the installation of high-power DC chargers across all licence areas. Once each site becomes operational, it will be integrated into an internal system that allows employees to locate and access nearby chargers easily.

This development is part of NGED’s broader strategy to reduce emissions, support fleet electrification, and enhance the efficiency of its network operations.
