North East Lincolnshire Council takes parking control

Parking enforcement in North East Lincolnshire is to be transferred from the police to the local authority.
From 5 July, council parking attendants are making regular patrols of parking areas and are able to issue penalty charge notices.

Income generated through fines will now be spent on transport and parking improvements rather than going to central government, the council said.

Penalty charges will remain at the same levels as those issued by the police.

The council said 17 people were being recruited as civil parking enforcement officers.

Mick Phoenix, the authority's parking services manager, said the team would be able to enforce restrictions "more effectively" as police had limited resources to deal with the issue.

He said: "The vast majority of people who park sensibly will not notice any change, except for less congestion on the streets."
