Palm Springs International Airport Completes Installation of 80 EV Chargers

New charging infrastructure in Lot B is expected to become operational following final testing and commissioning

Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) has completed the installation of 80 electric vehicle charging points in parking Lot B, significantly expanding EV charging capacity for passengers using the airport. Once commissioned, the installation is expected to rank among the largest airport charging facilities in Southern California.

The chargers will be made available to the public after final testing is completed. Users will pay for the electricity consumed as well as a fixed $1 session fee through the ChargePoint app. Charging costs are expected to vary depending on the time of use, while the airport's standard parking charges will apply separately.

Airport staff are still assessing how many parking spaces should initially be reserved exclusively for EV charging. Usage will be monitored so that the allocation can be adjusted in line with demand. Dedicated signage will identify charging spaces and support enforcement where necessary.

The EV rollout forms part of a broader series of operational and infrastructure developments currently underway at Palm Springs International Airport.

Among these is the replacement of escalators serving the Bono courtyard. Both escalators will be unavailable during the works, with elevators and stairs remaining accessible. Completion of the project is currently scheduled for September.

The airport has also introduced a remote taxi dispatch system. Taxi drivers can now enter the airport's passenger pickup queue remotely rather than waiting on airport property. According to airport staff, the system has operated smoothly so far and can be adapted as passenger volumes change.

Separately, plans have been prepared to expand restroom capacity between the Bono terminal and courtyard from 34 to 43 stalls. The approximately $8.7 million project has not yet secured funding, and the airport continues to explore federal and state funding opportunities.

Parking is also contributing to stronger airport revenues. The airport's operations and maintenance fund was reported to be running around 8% above budget, supported in part by higher parking charges and new food and beverage concessions. The daily parking rate at PSP was previously increased from $20 to $26 following approval by Palm Springs City Council.
