Parking lot project breaks ground
Construction work has started on Phase 1 of the Poley Park parking lot project that will create 63 paved parking spaces in two surface parking lots.
The $322,000 project includes a new entrance plaza on West Marshall Street, stormwater management improvements, new parking lot lighting using solar technology and a fire hydrant in the parking lot. Corson Street will be improved with new paving and a retaining wall down to the main parking lot level.
The main parking lot will include 45 parking spaces and Corson Street will have 18 parking spaces.
Im ecstatic because this was a long time coming, said Jayne Musonye, the Norristown planning director. It has been a difficult project to get the funding. We managed to have a collaborative effort between the county, the state and the federal government. Were glad we were able to deliver this.
Funding came from federal Community Development Block Grant recovery funds, Montgomery County revitalization funds and the state Department of Community and Economic Development.
James Kenney Excavating and Paving of Collegeville is the general contractor. Construction is expected to last three months.
Preparation work started on April 5 with the Norristown public works department using crushed stone from the road program to prepare the site for paving work.
Phase II of the Poley Park project will include a multi-use grassy area in the rear area of the park with parking space for 84 cars and play equipment. Funding for Phase II will be dependent on new grants.
Back in February 2008, 21 neighborhood residents told municipal officials they liked a $1,745,913 design with 147 parking spaces. The design, called Sketch G, included 47 parking spaces on a stabilized turf semi-circle that would surround an outdoor gazebo/stage area. The grassy turf area was designed to be built on a base of crushed stone and gravel to prevent a muddy field.
In several public design meetings, locals asked for more parking spaces to accommodate residents and shoppers on West Marshall Street.
I do wish it will meet the needs of the community as we move along to complete it, Musonye said. We wouldnt have gotten where we are if we hadnt gotten the comments from the local residents about the design plans. They helped shape what is being built.
