Pay & Display bids Welsh drivers “Neges Croesanu”* in Denbighshire
A “first” for Schlumberger as Strada(tm) parking terminal displays instructions in Welsh and English.
Rhyl, Wales, September 25, 2003 – Schlumberger e-City, a business segment of Schlumberger Limited, today announced that it has provided Denbighshire County Council (DCC) with the first ever Pay & Display parking terminal to display user instructions in Welsh as the prime language. Information is provided both on the LCD display and the front plate of a Strada terminal, the most recent addition to the Schlumberger P&D range. Drivers can opt to have information displayed in English at the press of a button.

The Council first installed 50 autonomous battery-operated Schlumberger P&D terminals four years ago. When an old P&D machine needed replacing in the centre of Ruthin, the Council chose the new Strada, both for its slim profile and the high level of security provided by its all- steel casing. “We were delighted to find that Schlumberger could also supply us with bi-lingual machines”, noted Sioned Bowen, DCC’s Director of Life Long Learning with special responsibility for encouraging bi-lingual capabilities. “The Council is committed to maintaining and promoting the use of the Welsh language, whilst also providing information in Welsh and English.” The Council opted for the solar-powered version of the Strada as it is environmentally-friendly and easy, inexpensive and less disruptive to install as there are no mains connections or cabling involved. “I am delighted to see us pursuing this initiative,” added Councillor Mike German, DCC’s Cabinet Leader on Environmental Affairs. “Although we were cautious, at first, of using this alternative energy source, our trials proved that it works just fine.”
