Pionix Raises Over €8M to Advance Open-Source EV Charging Globally

Pionix Raises Over €8M

German e-mobility startup Pionix has secured more than €8 million in funding to expand its open-source solutions for the global electric vehicle (EV) charging market. The late seed round was led by Ascend Capital Partners, with contributions from Start-up BW Seed Fonds (managed by MBG Baden-Württemberg), Pale Blue Dot, Vireo Ventures, Axeleo Ventures, and additional investors.

Despite significant growth in e-mobility, the EV charging sector remains fragmented. Numerous hardware and software providers rely on proprietary systems that often cannot communicate seamlessly, resulting in interoperability challenges, higher maintenance demands, and charging session error rates that can reach 25%.

Founded in 2021, Pionix aims to simplify EV charging technology by providing a common software foundation that enhances compatibility, reliability, and long-term infrastructure performance. At the heart of this effort is EVerest, an open-source platform initiated and actively supported by Pionix. EVerest creates a unified framework for charger manufacturers, operators, automakers, and fleet managers, helping reduce compatibility issues and enabling faster innovation across the EV charging ecosystem.

The platform has become a major open-source project in cleantech, with around 600 contributors from more than 70 organizations, powering hundreds of thousands of chargers worldwide.

Pionix plans to use the new funding to reduce fragmentation in EV charging through open, modular software and hardware products. The company also aims to grow the EVerest ecosystem further, collaborating with its global community to support the development of next-generation charging infrastructure.
