PRISMO LTD. WINS INTERTRAFFIC INNOVATION AWARD 2004
The winner of the Intertraffic Innovation Award was announced this morning during the official opening of Intertraffic 2004. This award is given to the company with the most innovative product or service at the exhibition. There were initially around 50 entries, from which an international jury of experts nominated ten innovations. The company Prismo Ltd. from the United Kingdom received the award for its product Colourbright, a technically advanced reflective coloured surfacing that is visible on unlit roads at night. The Intertraffic Innovation Award 2004 was supported by the Dutch Directorate General of Public Works & Water Management.
Assessment criteria
During his speech at the presentation ceremony, jury member H. Luikens (Managing Director AVV Research Centre of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works & Water Management) explained that the products had been judged based upon their technological improvement, design and the expected efficiency. Other important factors taken into consideration included the ease of application, the contribution made to a safer living environment and the products’ feasibility in everyday practice. The importance attached to the stimulating effect of the award by the Dutch government was shown by the fact that the Directorate General of Public Works & Water Management supported the event for the second Intertraffic running.
Ten nominees
The ten companies selected by the jury back in January were Erich Utsch AG from Germany, DTV Consultants, Silca Traffic Systems, Parkmate Products and Vialis Verkeer & Mobiliteit from the Netherlands, H.C.I.S. from France, Arsenal Research and SKIDATA AG from Austria, Prismo Ltd. from the United Kingdom, and SERNIS from Portugal. During its final assessment on the day before the Intertraffic exhibition got underway, the jury decided that the Colourbright product from the company Prismo Ltd. would be announced as the overall winner. The innovation award, a bronze statue, was presented this morning during the opening of Intertraffic by H. Luikens.

It is clear from a number of applications that the colour and the reflection of the surface can have a positive influence on safety. This innovative surfacing material reflects vehicle headlights in the from of reflective colour. The high visibility of coloured surfacing in darkness is a remarkable technical innovation. A standard for measurement of the intensity of coloured surfacing is still lacking and the impact of traffic intensity, wear and tear, as well as pollution of the reflectivity, are unknown. The coloured surfacing may improve traffic safety significantly due to better recognition of ‘dangerous’ areas especially during night hours by means of the aggressive colour of the surface.More information about prismo:
