Raleigh to change parking system downtown
The quest for free downtown parking in Raleigh is getting tougher, with the city planning to install 173 new pay stations in the downtown corridor.
The new pay stations will go up Jan. 25 and let residents use coins or credit cards to buy parking in 15-minute increments, according to a city of Raleigh news release.
The stations will be put throughout the downtown core bounded by Edenton, South, Blount and Harrington streets and will replace the green signs that currently allow drivers to park for up to two hours for free.
No receipts will be printed, but residents will have to feed a meter that serves multiple parking spots to avoid being ticketed.
The new parking pay stations will also be installed in the Glenwood South entertainment district as well as on Hillsborough Street near N.C. State University's campus once a project to install roundabouts on the thoroughfare is finished next fall.
A two-week grace period after the Jan. 25 start date will let citizens get used to the new parking system without fear of being ticketed, according to the news release.
Parking will be free on weekdays after 5 p.m. and on weekends.
