Scheidt & Bachmann: Park and fly in Rome

Aeroporti di Roma

At the international airports in Rome – Fiumicino and Ciampino (Aeroporti di Roma – ADR) – the use of parking is becoming more convenient and less complicated for passengers, visitors and employees: An entervo parking management system from Scheidt & Bachmann is controlling the daily entries and exits on no fewer than 163 lanes.

”We chose entervo because Scheidt & Bachmann, together with their Italian partner ParkIt, proposed a solution that covers our needs in terms of functionality and service for modern, future-oriented parking management at airports,” says Antonio Fraccari, General Director ADR Mobility. “In our opinion, the expertise with which Scheidt & Bachmann have already equipped so many airports, as well as their high quality portfolio of goods and services, sets the standard.”

Open for extreme flexibility

The new parking management system for the two airports satisfies a number of different of requirements. For example, the some 15,000 current employees can continue to use the existing control media for access to employee parking. The entrance and exit control devices still accept both magnetic stripe cards for long-term parking and barcode tickets for short-term parking. The existing cards were integrated into the new system without any trouble.

Elsewhere the open design of the entervo system made it possible to integrate solutions from third-party suppliers: a business intelligence system and an automatic number plate recognition system can exchange data with the parking management system. The business intelligence solution can be used to vary products and tariffs, in order to optimise utilisation of parking areas, for example.

Flexibility is also the keyword for the integrated reservation system: identification media options include motor vehicle number plates, 2D barcodes, PIN codes and Telepass cards. The latter offer the parking customer the advantage of paying parking fees all together at the end of the month.

Fair billing and attractive discounts

In special areas of the airports, there are pay-and-display machines where customers can purchase a prepaid ticket. That ticket permits the driver to enter and exit the terminal area. If the paid parking time limit is exceeded, the additional fee can be paid at an automatic pay station or directly at the exit. This means stress-free parking for the customer, who feels better because exceeding the parking time limit does not result in a fine, but instead is billed fairly.

Through the Retail Campaign Management System from Scheidt & Bachmann, ADR offers a large number of discount programmes. Example no. 1: The customers of a participating firm receive a discount for the use of a specific parking area. Example no. 2: A special promotion code is printed in regional newspapers in conjunction with an advertising campaign. The system generates, distributes and processes all of the necessary promotion codes.

Breakthroughs against breakdowns

With such a large number of field units, occasional malfunctions – despite regular maintenance – are inevitable in practice. ADR’s visitors never even notice this, however: if a control device fails temporarily, service employees use a smartphone as a mobile stopgap solution. It generates a ticket at the entrance, which can then be paid at the exit just like any other parking ticket – with cash or credit card.

In order to maintain the highest possible level of availability for the entire system at ADR, Scheidt & Bachmann work together with their Italian partner firm ParkIt – with success. Antonio Fraccari: “Already during the short, five-month installation phase, the ParkIt employees well impressed us. Some ideas we proposed afterwards were easily integrated into the system.” Five service specialists are deployed full time at ADR. They carry out maintenance work at regular intervals and respond to service calls immediately.

Antonio Fraccari sums it up this way: “Our state-of-the-art parking management system is a safe investment. It features a wide range of functions and solutions which are matched to our needs, the delivery times for field devices were very short and the service concept is comprehensive.”
