Construction work begins on Manuka Smart Parking trial

Manuka Smart Parking trial

Construction of the ACT Government’s Smart Parking trial has begun this week in Manuka, with minor disruptions to parking bays and some construction noise expected.

From Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 November 2015, contractors will commence drilling sensors into parking bays throughout the Manuka business precinct. The majority of work will be completed outside of peak business periods to ensure that disruption to local businesses, residents and shoppers is minimised. Work will begin onsite from 7 am on Bougainville Street

The process for each on-street bay takes approximately eight minutes, and parking bays will be temporarily fenced off to ensure a safe deployment. As each bay sensor is installed that parking bay will become available for use again.

From Tuesday 17 to Friday 20 November 2015, contractors will be installing sensors on the off-street parking complex on Furneaux Street. Small sections of parking bays will be unavailable throughout this period as well as some medium level noise associated with intermittent drilling works, particularly on Friday 20 November.

Temporary traffic management and safety barriers around workers will be in place to ensure safety for both the public and construction crews.

Contractors will work to strict Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regulations to ensure construction noise is managed appropriately.

The Manuka Smart Parking trial will use innovative technology to save drivers time, reduce traffic delays and provide a better overall parking experience. Drivers will be able to use the smart phone app and intelligent traffic signs (mounted on street light poles)to be guided to an available parking space, while real time information on parking availability will be captured through 460 in-ground sensors.

The ACT Government thanks residents, businesses and shoppers for their patience during the construction period. Please direct enquiries regarding installation noise to Rohan Peek, Environment Protection Officer, ACT Government (02) 6207 2188 (during business hours).
