Tenix Solutions trialling innovative drive by digital parking enforcement system

Tenix Solutions, Australias leading parking enforcement services provider, is trialling an innovative digital parking enforcement system called autoChalk.
autoChalk uses sophisticated digital imaging, lasers and GPS to electronically chalk vehicles and
detect time overstay offences. autoChalk is mounted to a vehicle, which is driven by a Parking Officer
at normal speeds to scan parked vehicles. autoChalk detects violations by driving past each parking
bay at two intervals. At the first interval autoChalk captures digital photographs of the vehicle in the
bay, recording vehicle size, shape, colour and exact location using GPS.
At the second interval, autoChalk takes a second image and automatically compares the
characteristics of the observed vehicle to the vehicle previously recorded in that location. If the
characteristics are the same, autoChalk alerts the authorised officer, displaying the current image and
previous images captured. Before a ticket is issued an authorised officer verifies the images captured
and checks the vehicle characteristics such as license plate, colour and model, are the same at each
interval, as well as verifying the position of the vehicle is the same.
autoChalk can scan two vehicles per second at speeds of 50km/h, 2.5 metres away, meaning it can
monitor the same number of timed parking bays as up to five parking officers walking the same area.
autoChalk does not use automated number plate recognition technology to detect offences, but instead
uses lasers and digital imaging to determine whether a vehicle has violated a time restriction, which is
then approved by an authorised officer.
The data autoChalk captures can also be used to report on parking bay turnover, vehicles parking in
no stopping areas as well as detect repeat offenders more efficiently than current methods. As a
result, councils are able use this data to help track traffic flow patterns, adjust parking time restrictions
and introduce different regulations or physical deterrents. autoChalk is used in Canada and the United
States.
Tenix Solutions is currently conducting a technical trial of the autoChalk system to validate the
accuracy of the solution. The trial will also evaluate the suitability of the solution to local environmental
conditions and the local legislative environment.
If the trial proves to be successful, Tenix Solutions plans to launch the product to the Australian local
government market. This trial is part of Tenix Solutions broader strategy to develop smarter and safer
solutions for its customers that provide fairer outcomes to the community.
