TimHaahs Selected for Union Station Parking Structure Expansion
The Union Station Redevelopment Corporation (USRC) has selected Timothy Haahs and Associates, Inc. (TimHaahs) to design a 1,000-space expansion to its existing parking structure in Washington, DC. In addition, the firm will develop renovation and beautification plans for the existing structure.
The USRC is also looking to improve the image of the parking structure as part of the expansion program. When the existing parking structure was built 25 years ago, the exterior architectural expression was not a key design issue. RTKL is on the team as the architectural design consultant to develop concepts for improving the aesthetics of this austere parking structure.
The expansion of the existing parking structure and bus garage poses complex structural engineering challenges that demand expert design leadership. In addition to the fact that this facility is built over railroad tracks, the project also faces the challenge of addressing the traffic complexity, minimizing potential conflict between vehicles and pedestrians, and integrating potentially high volumes of bus, automobile, and rental car traffic.
In providing complete parking design services for the project, TimHaahs will also evaluate the current parking access and revenue control system and develop the optimum system that meets the diverse requirements of Union Station patrons.
This project adds to the growing list of transit-oriented parking structure design projects that TimHaahs has been chosen to design.
