Every July, National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month serves as an important reminder that protecting your vehicle starts long before you turn the key.

Simple habits that may feel second-natural to many drivers can significantly reduce the risk of theft, like:

• Lock your doors and closing all windows
• Never leave the keys inside the vehicle
• Remove all valuables from plain sight

• Never leave the vehicle running unattended
• Utilize an anti-theft device or vehicle tracking system
• Stay aware of your surroundings when arriving at or leaving your vehicle.

These recommendations, promoted by national safety organizations, are among the most effective ways drivers can protect themselves. But even when every precaution is taken, vehicle thefts and break-ins can still occur.

When they do, the parking facility itself can become one of the most valuable resources for both operators and law enforcement.

The Park Assist Solution, for example, combines parking guidance with intelligent surveillance capabilities in a single piece of hardware to give operators greater visibility throughout their facility.

At the heart of the system is the M5 Smart-Sensor, a dual-camera sensor that monitors up to six parking spaces, space-by-space, while collecting occupancy data with more than 99% accuracy. Because every parking space is continuously monitored, operators have access to detailed records of vehicle activity throughout the garage.

License Plate Recognition Can Help Investigations

With Park Assist’s optional Park Finder integration, operators can quickly search stored footage for a specific vehicle by license plate number thanks to integrated license plate recognition (LPR) technology in the M5 sensor.

"When an incident occurs, every minute matters,” continued Sparrow. “Being able to quickly determine whether a vehicle entered the facility, where it parked, and when it left gives operators and law enforcement information they can act on instead of starting from scratch."

If a vehicle is reported stolen or law enforcement is searching for a vehicle of interest, information can be easily collected from the parking guidance system. Depending on the custom configuration of the facility’s Park Assist system, operators may be able to determine some or all of the following:

• Whether the vehicle entered the garage
• When it arrived
• Where it was parked
• When it exited the facility

This information can significantly reduce the time required to locate a vehicle or reconstruct events during an investigation.

Video Evidence When It’s Needed Most

For facilities that choose to add optional Park Surveillance technology to their Park Assist system, operators gain access to high-definition recorded video from the smart sensor cameras installed throughout the garage.

If a theft, break-in, or other incident occurs, HD video footage can provide valuable evidence by helping investigators:

• Review activity surrounding the vehicle
• Identify individuals involved
• Establish timelines
• Support law enforcement investigations

While unfortunately no technology can prevent every crime, visible HD cameras clearly stationed throughout the facility, that actively monitor the surroundings of a vehicle, may deter criminal activity. When an incident does occur, recorded video can provide valuable evidence for investigators.

Real-Time Awareness Through Intelligent Alerts

Another optional add-on for the Park Assist Solution is Park Alerts, which uses AI-powered analytics to notify operators when predefined events occur.

For example, operators can choose to be notified when:

• An unknown vehicle parks in a restricted or reserved area
• A known unwanted vehicle arrives at the facility
• Suspicious activity is detected
• Or other custom alert conditions established by the facility are triggered

Rather than relying solely on manual monitoring, operators can identify events more efficiently and respond more quickly as they develop.
