Hargassner Expands Site with Sustainable Construction

As a pioneer in environmentally friendly heating with renewable energy, Austrian family-owned company Hargassner has been developing and selling innovative heating technology solutions based on wood for over forty years. In line with their core values of energy efficiency, sustainability, and regionality, Hargassner has now expanded its site in Weng im Innkreis with a unique, environmentally conscious addition: a five-story wooden employee parking garage.

The lighting and energy efficiency concept for the new parking structure was developed and delivered in collaboration with lighting expert TRILUX, ensuring both sustainability and smart building integration.

Europe’s Largest Wooden Parking Garage

To increase parking capacity at its Weng site, Hargassner commissioned the construction of a new, sustainable building with around 500 parking spaces. With a gross area of 13,500 m², the structure is now the largest wooden parking garage in Central Europe.

The garage consists of two bays, each with five floors, connected by a mezzanine. Notably, only the access ramps, stairwells, gable walls, and diagonal bracing in the eaves were built using solid construction. All other structural elements – including columns, ceiling and roof beams, as well as ceiling and roof panels – were made from wood. In total, more than 2,200 cubic meters of this renewable material were used, all sourced locally.

Thanks to the sustainable construction using wood, we saved around 4,600 tons of CO₂ compared to a traditional solid parking garage,” says Florian Pommer, Project Manager at Hargassner.

TRILUX Lighting Concept: Light, Wood, and Nature

Sustainability also played a central role in the lighting design. The complete lighting solution was planned and delivered by TRILUX, who had previously equipped Hargassner’s production area with 500 Ondo high-bay luminaires, ensuring optimal light performance.

TRILUX Lighting Concept: Light, Wood, and Nature

For the new parking garage, TRILUX implemented a custom lighting concept using approximately 300 dimmable Deveo Fit damp-proof luminaires. These were networked, combined with sensors, and integrated into Hargassner’s existing building management system for energy-efficient control and smart monitoring.

A practical and aesthetic highlight of the TRILUX solution is the Lambertian light distribution, which creates a soft ceiling illumination that accentuates the structure’s natural wooden surfaces.
The parking garage is a widely visible statement for sustainable construction, demonstrating how attractiveness, regionality, and a high level of environmental awareness can be perfectly combined,” says Stefan Neumann, Project Manager at TRILUX, who led the implementation of the lighting system in close cooperation with Hargassner.
