San José, CA to Partner with Umojo to Undertake Downtown Curb Management Utilization Pilot Project

- Chicago, IL
San José has ambitious transportation and climate goals and has pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Umojo, a leader in Curb Inventory Management Solutions, announced today that it has been selected by the City of San José, CAas a partner to undertake a curb inventory digitization and management pilot project. This initiative follows the city’s grant funding by the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve mobility and traffic across its urban core.

In 2022, The U.S. Department of Transportation opened a grant application program for municipalities to drive Smart City initiatives. Cities were encouraged to submit innovative program proposals to improve safety, efficiency, congestion, and quality of life in urban corridors. Amongst those cities selected to receive funding was the City of San José.

San José has ambitious transportation and climate goals and has pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030 with at least half of trips made by transit, biking, micro-mobility, or on foot by 2040. Its Downtown Transportation Plan identified curb management and demand-based parking pricing as strategies needed to reach these climate goals. San José aims to digitize their curb inventory, study curb utilization, and develop strategies to address limited curb space into a more flexible, efficient, and responsive asset to its diverse users.

The San José Department of Transportation chose Umojo as a technology partner for this initiative. Umojo’s NexCity Curb Management solution will be the technology foundation to empower the San José team to undertake this pilot. With phase 1 of the pilot to begin June 1, Umojo will scan the city’s curb inventory, create a digitized map, import current city infrastructure data utilizing The Curb Data Specification (CDS) standard, and install AI-based camera and sensor technology to monitor curb utilization across 800 curb-side spaces. Umojo will collect and analyze data to identify and understand issue areas and develop strategies for an eventual citywide roll-out of curb monitoring and management in phase 2 of the program.

Elias Koury, San José Department of Transportation On-street Parking Manager, stated, “We are really excited to work with UMOJO on our Smart Curbs Pilot funded by US DOT under its SMART Grants Program.  UMOJO was the top-rated vendor selected by Sourcewell after a procurement process which included 26 participants.  UMOJO demonstrated that it has the expertise and technology to translate our vision of Smart Curbs into reality.  In addition to operational and safety benefits, this project will help inform policies to help achieve the City’s goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing transportation safety and equity.

Son Jose cityRick Neubauer, Umojo CEO, Stated, “We are honored and excited to be selected by the City of San José to be its curb management partner for this grant program initiative. We strongly believe that a city can’t truly become a “Smart City” unless it addresses its curb inventory. San José is an innovative, forward-looking city that understands the impact a well-managed curb can have across the entire city and its citizens’ lives. NexCity will provide a centralized, end-to-end Curb Management Solution to empower a digitized, secure, and prosperous San José urban core. We are delighted to work with the San José team on this important program.
