University of Utah Approves Major Underground Parking Expansion

New facility to add 1,500 parking spaces while preserving campus landscape

The University of Utah has approved plans to construct a large underground parking facility that will significantly increase parking capacity on campus. The project, endorsed by the university’s Board of Trustees, will deliver approximately 1,500 new parking spaces to help accommodate growing demand from students, staff and visitors.

The board voted to utilize $116.3 million authorized by the state legislature to expand parking and provide free public transit for students and employees.

Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, with the 1,500 subterranean stalls expected to be completed within 20 to 24 months. The facility will be located just west of the Jon M. Huntsman Center and will include two to three underground levels built beneath a planned mixed-use development featuring housing, dining and retail space.

By placing parking below ground, the university aims to preserve surface-level space while supporting future campus expansion. The approach enables more efficient land use and aligns with broader development plans for the area.

University officials noted that parking demand has continued to rise due to campus growth and increased activity. The new structure is expected to ease congestion in existing lots and improve overall traffic circulation.
