WiCity Fever Catches on at UBC
WiCity , the free wireless internet network provided by Photo Violation Technologies Corp. (PVT), has officially swept UBC right off its feet.
For the past 3 months, WiCityTM offered free wireless internet to students and local residents visiting the UBC Village, where three of the PhotoViolationMetersTM (PVM) are solving parking problems for the school. Although UBC already offers free wireless internet though its own network, it is accessible only to students and faculty, and only in the central core of the campus site. Unfortunately, the UBC Village, where voluminous flow of students visit on their breaks for lunch and gatherings, falls just short of the networks range, making this area very non net-generation friendly. The only available source of WiFi stems from caffeine monopolist Starbucks. So naturally and without saying, it only comes at a price.
Photo Violation Technologies made many web-babies very happy when it brought WiCityTM to the village. Anyone with a WiFi connection can register for a free account and begin surfing the net immediately after. Philips Jeffrey, a UBC graduate student currently exploring how and why people use user-generated content, urban play, and related social and cultural issues that may emerge, loved WiCityTM so much, he posted a blurb about it in his research blog.
"Im excited that there is free WiFi in the UBC Village, and as the students become more aware of this service, it should become quite popular" Philip explains in his entry. As a graduate student at the University of British Columbia, I have been fortunate to attend a university where WiFi is available across the campusHowever, when I walk across the street to the UBC village, it [is] like entering a dead zone. The only WiFi available [is] through Starbucks, which isnt free. He goes on to add, This is a great opportunity to use my laptop in the UBC Village as I need to access the internet while doing graduate research. Free WiFi rocks!!!
