Widespread Adoption of Multi-Space Parking Meters Continues Throughout Northeast

Today, Digital Payment Technologies (DPT), a leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of multi-space parking pay stations, and Integrated Technical Systems (ITS), a DPT reseller and leading Northeast integrator of electronic and computerized systems, announced the completion of new parking meter installations throughout the Northeast. These installations, which are managed by ITS, bring up to 700 of DPT’s LUKE II multi-space parking pay stations to cities along the New Jersey Shore, throughout Westchester County, NY, in Massachusetts and at universities within the DC-Baltimore area.

"We’re seeing a common theme in the Northeast when it comes to parking,” said Joe Yorlano, director of sales at ITS. “Budgets are tight, municipalities need new ways to drive revenue, and they’re looking to neighboring cities for ideas and inspiration. They’re finding multi-space pay stations are inexpensive to implement and typically provide a return on their investment after just seven to nine months. With programs such as municipal leasing, they require little overhead and are pretty much self-funded out of the additional revenues generated."

Asbury Park was the first Jersey Shore community to adopt DPT’s parking meters with its purchase of 100 LUKE II multi-space pay stations. Wanting to replicate the success of the Asbury Park deployment, other nearby cities have upgraded to DPT, including Red Bank, Long Branch and Stone Harbor. A similar trend can be found in Westchester County, NY, where the successful deployment of about 150 pay stations in White Plains spurred adoption in nearby cities, including New Rochelle, Scarsdale and Bedford. In Massachusetts, DPT meters have been selected by the cities of Plymouth, Cambridge and Salem. Universities in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore area, including American University, Morgan State University and University of Maryland Baltimore County are also using pay stations from DPT.

In most cases, the multi-space pay stations from DPT have replaced outdated mechanical single-head meters. In addition to reducing street clutter, the pay stations offer an average of 30 to 40 percent more revenue for municipalities. This is enabled by multiple payment options for consumers, removal of piggybacking on the previous vehicle’s unused time, and greater compliance by consumers with ability to extend parking through any pay station in the area via mobile phone. The DPT pay stations also increased operational efficiency through better collection and enforcement processes. In the case of Asbury Park, the city was able to boost revenues by more than 60 percent within the first year.

"The flexibility of DPT’s platform enables cities to customize the pay stations to meet their unique needs,” said Justin Godderis, regional sales manager at DPT. “For example, cities on the New Jersey Shore are selling beach passes from the pay stations in addition to parking, and in other communities, local merchants offer patrons coupons for complimentary parking as part of their loyalty programs."

Most pay stations are operating in Pay-by-Space (PBS) mode and many deployments include trials of advanced technologies such as Extend-by-Phone services, which allow the consumer to receive alerts on their phone before parking expires and add time via text message.
