YUL P4 Parking Facility Becomes First Canadian Airport Infrastructure to Earn Envision Certification

A parking facility at YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport has been recognized for its approach to sustainability and long-term resilience.

The P4 structure, operated by ADM Aéroports de Montréal, has achieved Envision Verified certification from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. According to the project information, it is the first parking facility and the first airport infrastructure project in Canada to receive the recognition.

P4 opened in February 2024 and forms part of YUL’s wider infrastructure modernization program. The project was reviewed using the Envision framework, which considers a broad range of sustainability and resilience factors across infrastructure planning, design and delivery.

Several elements of P4 were developed with lower resource consumption and environmental impact in mind. Photovoltaic panels installed on the roof generate renewable energy, while part of the rooftop area incorporates vegetation. The facility also uses measures aimed at reducing overall energy demand and managing stormwater more sustainably.

Material use and construction waste were also addressed during delivery of the project. Close to 90% of construction waste was diverted from landfill.

Alongside its environmental features, P4 includes technology and services intended to make the parking journey easier for airport users.

A parking guidance system provides drivers with information on available spaces, helping them navigate the facility more efficiently. Passengers can travel between the parking area and the terminal using a dedicated shuttle connection. These operational features were considered alongside the wider sustainability measures incorporated into the project.

Long-term adaptability was another element of the P4 design. The facility uses a modular concrete structure intended to support durability and improve resilience to future climate-related conditions. Its design also allows the structure to be adapted for alternative uses if parking requirements change over time.

By considering possible future uses at the design stage, the project aims to extend the useful life of the infrastructure rather than limiting the building to a single permanent function.

The Envision recognition places P4 among infrastructure projects assessed not only on their immediate purpose, but also on their environmental performance, resilience and long-term value.
