Thousands of ultrasonic sensors for a mega car park belonging to Fraport AG
Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe's most important transport hubs, is relying on innovative sensor technology from Lower Bavaria for its new Terminal 3. MSR-Traffic GmbH, a company of MSR-Group GmbH, and its sister company VOLTA have been awarded the contract for a state-of-the-art parking guidance system by the operating company FRAPORT AG, which will make travelling easier for millions of people.
At the heart of the project is the new car park at Terminal 3, one of the largest in Europe. Here, over 8,000 state-of-the-art parking sensors from the SONICI product range and 144 LED matrix displays from MSR-Traffic ensure optimal parking space search.
"Within a few weeks, 4,818 sensors had already been successfully installed. By the time it's finished in autumn 2025, there'll be 8,353 sensors, along with 170 zone controllers and almost as many digital signposts. Big projects like this are super rare worldwide, so we're really chuffed that they've put their trust in our company again," says COO Harald Schmitt.
The technology speaks for itself: the system works in real time and displays available parking spaces accurately. This makes finding a parking space much easier in the hectic everyday life of an airport. Travellers benefit from a stress-free start to their holiday, while the operating company Fraport AG can efficiently manage capacity utilisation with the help of real-time data.
‘We are particularly proud of our entire team, which has done an outstanding job in such a short time," emphasises operations manager Frank Würz, who is also responsible for overall project management.
The combination of intelligent technology and practical application is what makes this project so forward-looking. Together with its sister company VOLTA, MSR-Traffic is creating a solution that offers long-term benefits for both travellers and operators. Completion of the entire park system is scheduled for autumn 2025. It is already clear that this major project will set new standards in terms of functionality and sustainability.
