AVUTEC: API Integration for ANPR-Based Parking Access

How can shared parking access be controlled simply yet effectively? Rivium Business Park in Rotterdam is a bustling hub with numerous office buildings and a high volume of daily commuters. In such a dynamic environment, efficient traffic flow and automation play a significant role in ensuring smooth operations.

The Need for a Smart Parking System

Managing parking efficiently was a priority for two companies within Rivium, as their office building accommodates dozens of employees and frequent visitors. The adjacent parking lot is shared between both companies. To streamline access and enhance security by limiting entry only to authorized vehicles, they adopted an advanced parking and vehicle access control system based on ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology.

The integration

To achieve this, the companies implemented a system featuring:

 

Park-R

The Park-R Parking Management System (PMS), which provides full control over parking access for employees and visitors, being ideal for multi-company buildings.

With Park-R, each project can be tailored by choosing between the Basic or Pro versions, with the optional Park-R Payments module for paid parking. The system follows a modular approach, making it simple to upgrade.

 

AVUTEC ANPR cameras

For this project, two of the compact Module-X cameras were selected. For a robust yet subtle installation, they were built into stainless steel terminals.

Equipped with onboard image processing, the dual-camera systems (colour and IR) detect both license plates and vehicle direction, transmitting the data via IP connection to the PMS.

 

 

A barrier for each entry

Automatic boom barriers were provided and installed by Van Ginderen specialists at the access points of the parking lot.

In combination with the PMS and ANPR systems, the barriers represent the final component for a fully automated and secure vehicle access control solution.

How it works

The parking lot features two access points, each supporting two-way traffic—allowing vehicles to both enter and exit through either gate. How does the integration handle such a configuration?

• License plate recognition

The AVUTEC Module-X camera detects and reads a license plate as soon as it comes into view.

• Vehicle direction detection

Next, the camera determines whether the vehicle is entering or exiting. Together with the license plate number, this information is sent to Park-R for verification.

• Database Verification

The Park-R system checks its database for registered license plates and visitor reservations.

The integration between the Module-X ANPR cameras and Park-R’s PMS ensures real-time verification of authorized license plates and reservation periods.

• Access Granted?

If the vehicle is exiting, the process stops here and the camera awaits the next license plate.

If the car is entering and has an authorized license plate, de barrier will open.

All entries are logged within the system for security tracking and troubleshooting.

• Driving out

Exit control is managed by loop detection at both barriers, ensuring a smooth vehicle departure. Although the camera reads the license plate again at the exit, the system recognizes the direction and prevents the barrier from opening a second time, avoiding any unintended or repeated activations.
