Driving in or Out? AVUTEC Knows the Difference

ANPR and built-in direction detection for smoother vehicle flow

AVUTEC Adds Direction Detection to Every Camera

Modern access control with license plate recognition is no longer only about identifying plates; understanding vehicle movement is just as important. That’s why AVUTEC cameras are built to know the difference between vehicles driving in and those driving out.

In many setups, challenges arise when a single lane must handle both entry and exit, when traffic must be enforced as one-way due to dedicated entry and exit lanes, or when accurate vehicle counting is required for parking operations.

This is where combining AVUTEC’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and vehicle direction detection adds valuable data. With this dual functionality, the system enables smarter access rules, smoother traffic flow, and more reliable overviews of parked vehicles.

Direction determination in AVUTEC cameras

What is vehicle direction and how does it work in AVUTEC cameras? In essence, the camera recognizes whether a license plate is coming closer or moving further away. Simple enough in principle, but in real traffic setups, direction isn’t just about movement on its own.

Each unit can also be configured with a role: as an ENTRY camera or EXIT camera. It’s the combination of these two signals — how a car moves relative to the lens, and how the camera itself is configured — that determines whether a vehicle is ultimately registered as IN or OUT.

Because every AVUTEC ANPR camera includes direction detection by default, this feature is always available to configure as needed, without requiring extra hardware or modules.

The principle of vehicle direction becomes much clearer in real-world examples, so let’s look at two common scenarios.

AVUTEC camera Scenario 1: shared entry/exit – one camera

For a two-way lane where vehicles both enter and exit, a single AVUTEC camera can register traffic from both directions— provided its field of view covers the full lane width. Approaching license plates are then logged as IN, while those moving away from the camera are logged as OUT.

Scenario 2: Separate entry and exit – two cameras

For dedicated entry and exit lanes that only allow one-way traffic, one camera can be installed per lane. In this case, the camera’s pre-configured role determines how vehicles are registered: approaching plates at an ENTRY camera are counted as IN, while approaching plates at an EXIT camera are counted as OUT.

AVUTEC ANPR direction determination

By pairing simple movement detection with configurable roles, AVUTEC cameras provide a robust method to always interpret direction correctly, regardless of how traffic flows at different access points.

Benefits for access, parking, and operations

1. Tailored vehicle access rules

Once direction determination is configured to match the location’s requirements, additional scripting can be added in AVUTEC cameras to define custom triggers and access rules based on vehicle direction (IN vs OUT). This makes it possible to implement smarter vehicle access control decisions about who can enter or exit, and under what conditions.

One example is anti-passback, which prevents multiple entries without a logged exit first:

  • Scenario 1:

(12:05) ABC123 → Entry granted
(12:25) ABC123 → Exit logged
(12:35) ABC123 → Second entry granted

  • Scenario 2:

(12:05) ABC123 → Entry granted
(12:35) ABC123 → Second entry denied (barrier remains closed)

2. Higher reliability, fewer false barrier triggers

Filtering access based on vehicle direction prevents barriers from opening unnecessarily when a vehicle approaches from the wrong side, even if its license plate is otherwise authorized.

This avoids needless open/close cycles of barriers and gates, reducing wear and tear over time. It also increases efficiency and reliability, since only vehicles meeting a combination of pre-set conditions are allowed to move past the barrier.

3. Vehicle counting and real-time parking overviews

By distinguishing between IN and OUT vehicles, AVUTEC cameras provide the data needed to track parking availability in real time.

When integrated with a third-party system via REST API, this data enables counting of vehicles that have entered and exited, displaying live parking occupancy, and blocking entry when full — saving drivers time and frustration.

4. Focused search of ANPR event history

Direction tagging makes it easier to know exactly when and how a recognized vehicle has moved.

Through the AVUTEC CortexSearch cloud dashboard, users can filter past recognitions and associated data (including snapshots) by IN or OUT events, allowing them to quickly trace vehicle movements and retrieve only the information that matters.

5. Simple deployment with minimal hardware

Each AVUTEC unit can detect vehicle direction in parallel with ANPR without requiring additional hardware. This is made possible by the built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which delivers the processing power needed for both tasks at once. As a result, deployments are simpler and more cost-effective.

Conclusion

The embedded direction detection in AVUTEC ANPR systems makes access control more adaptable to practical traffic scenarios such as mixed entry/exit lanes, one-way traffic, and custom parking access conditions. It streamlines operations without adding installation complexity.
