AVUTEC: How WattHub Uses ANPR to Automate Truck Access at Its EV Charging Hub
As more electric trucks enter the heavy-duty transport sector, operators of charging hubs must balance two critical requirements: strong security and a smooth, efficient driver experience.
WattHub, one of Europe's largest charging hubs for electric trucks, operates a busy facility at Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam. Serving heavy-duty electric trucks, logistics vehicles, service vehicles, and authorised visitors, the site required a scalable solution that could support growing traffic demand while eliminating unnecessary waiting times for drivers.
Working with Heras, a security integrator and AVUTEC partner, WattHub implemented an automated vehicle access solution that incorporates AVUTEC ANPR technology.
Making Security Feel Invisible
One of the company's objectives was to create a fully autonomous charging hub that combines security, accessibility, and user convenience.
WattHub wanted to allow drivers to arrive, charge, and leave with minimal friction while maintaining full control over site access. The solution was to automate the entire process.
Three Gatekeeper 410X ANPR cameras were installed at the site's entry and exit points and integrated with the backend access control infrastructure, speed gates, and sliding gates.
As vehicles approach, their license plates are automatically recognised by the AVUTEC ANPR cameras. The plate number is then verified against the authorised database of the integrated access control system. Approved vehicles are granted access immediately.
Built for Demanding Environments
The Maasvlakte location presents a challenging operating environment. Vehicle access technology must perform reliably outdoors, day and night, and in changing lighting and weather conditions.
AVUTEC was selected for its ability to deliver highly accurate license plate recognition in industrial environments and for its proven performance with larger vehicles such as trucks and logistics fleets.
Equally important was the ability to integrate with the wider security infrastructure delivered by Heras, including the access control, gate automation, and VMS platforms.
Faster Access, Better Experience
Since implementation, WattHub has transformed the way vehicles move through the site.
Drivers benefit from a fast and intuitive experience without manual check-ins or delays at entry and exit points. Site operators benefit from improved security, complete visibility of vehicle movements, and a scalable access management solution that can accommodate increasing traffic volumes.
"We very much wanted to have an autonomous charging hub here. Not only from a security perspective, but also in terms of accessibility, user-friendliness, and comfort for our customers. And we've achieved that."
Gerben van den Berg, Director of WattHub
Setting the Standard for Future Sites
Being part of a complete perimeter security solution provided by Heras, the AVUTEC ANPR system contributes to a secure, efficient, and user-friendly charging environment.
The success of the project has already influenced future developments, with the Maasvlakte site serving as a blueprint for future WattHub charging hubs, including the location in Geldermalsen, where a similar concept and system approach will be applied.
